I tried hard not to be an actor: Soha Ali Khan

January 4, 2010

When you are born in a family of actors, you are expected to become an actress eventually. The same happened with Soha Ali Khan, despite her trying very hard not to step into Bollywood. With yesteryear’s beauty queen Sharmila Tagore as mother and superstar Saif Ali Khan as brother, one would hardly expect Soha to take up any other profession, but she insists that she was initially reluctant to become an actress.

“Taking up acting was never my aim and I have tried very hard not to be an actor. I took up other professions like banking, but then there was a wish to become a part of the entertainment industry somehow,” Soha said. And it was this wish which she could not escape and it led her to the sets of ‘Dil Maange More’, the film she made her Bollywood debut with. She is a prominent face in the film industry now, with ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ in her kitty. Soha has carved a niche for herself with off-beat films like ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ and ‘Dil Kabaddi’ instead of going the full-blown ‘masala movie’ way. “I like to keep it varied and work in every genre as my aim is to perform. Many a times you do not get a chance to perform in glamourous films. I would like to be part of those films where I can prove myself as an actress,” said Soha.

Soha, whose last Bollywood release was ‘Tum Mile’ with Emraan Hashmi, is happy that she does not have to compete with her mother or brother in acting since both of them are successful in their respective spheres. But she does seek their appreciation at times. “I don’t turn to my family members for advice. But when my film is released I want amma (Sharmila) to watch it because her female perspective comes handy. “When I am signing a film with an unknown party, I might ask bhai (Saif) for his opinion. He is more experienced and will know whether the script will turn out to be a good film. But ultimately its my choice since its me who has to play the role,” said Soha.

The actress is a proud daughter and admires her mother’s achievements as an actress, but she makes it clear that she is not trying to ape Sharmila in any way. “I don’t want to imitate any actress, even my mother. I admire her for her body of work in every genre, be it acting in Satyajit Ray’s films or working with Denzel Washington. She is an icon for me,” said Soha. She is all praises for the way in which Sharmila has struck a balance between work and family and carried out both successfully.

“People say that you have to leave work after marriage, but my mother is still working. This year itself she has done three films. It is very difficult to become a successful actress, wife and mother, but she has done it all,” said Soha. The 31-year-old actress is quick to hush you up once you mention her age, saying, “Shh, you are not supposed to tell anyone! I am actually 16, eternally. I feel that I am small, petite and look young so my age does not matter.” The actress is currently shooting a Sudhir Mishra film ‘Tera Kya Hoga Johnny’ with Shiney Ahuja and has an English film named ‘Life Goes On’ up her sleeves.

Sajid nahin!

January 4, 2010

The folks associated with the Star Screen awards have taken the decision not to have Sajid Khan as the host for the 2009 film awards nite.

Last year, Ashutosh Gowariker made a hue and cry about the comments that Farah Khan’s brother had passed about him in jest at the event.

So instead of trampling on some more egos, they have decided to let Sajid go. The awards are slated for January 9 and will be telecast on Star Plus on January 18.

Apparently, Aditya Panscholi’s son’s tardiness and bad behaviour cost him his job.

Everyone knows what a hard taskmaster Bhansali is just ask Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor.

Suraj should have known better if he wanted to learn the ropes of filmmaking.

Aamir and I make fantastic pair: Kareena Kapoor

January 4, 2010

She is overwhelmed by the response to “3 Idiots” and has no regrets about the size of her role in the hit comedy drama. Kareena Kapoor says she is happy to work with Aamir Khan and pleased by the compliments she has received for their pairing.

“Everyone in one voice thinks we look good together. I think Aamir and I make a fantastic pair. I’d love to do another film with him immediately, this time I don’t want share him with other pivotal characters,” Kareena said.

Reacting to the opinion that she hardly has anything to do in ‘3 Idiots’, Kareena said: “Who says I’ve nothing to do? I’m very much part of the main drama. Would the story move forward if you remove my character?

“Everywhere I go, I am swamped by compliments for the role. The length of the role didn’t matter. I’m just glad to be part of a historic happening,” she said.

“When Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir asked me to be part of their film, I jumped at it. I knew the film would be special because of Raju and Aamir, and I was right. As far as our cinema is concerned, Aamir is god.”
In fact, talks are on with two leading filmmakers including Mani Ratnam who is apparently set to revive his Aamir-Kareena project “Lajjo”. A.R. Rahman and Gulzar have even recorded the songs.

Looking back on last year Kareena feels happy by the response to her performances in “Kurbaan” and “3 Idiots”.

“Both films are very precious to me. ‘Kurbaan’ was intense, ‘3 Idiots’ was more fun. In 2009, I did films with all the Khans…. Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh – I had a song with him in ‘Billu’ – and of course Saif.”

This time Kareena managed to ring in New Year with her family.

“I’ve been running around frantically promoting my film. And then I was ailing for a week. I decided I had to be well for the festive season. Christmas was a very, very special occasion for my mom and sister. But we never get to be together for the occasion.

“This time I was adamant. I made sure I took time off from work so all us girls could spend time together. My mom and I were here in Delhi to spend time with my sister and niece.

“Karisma and I don’t get to spend that much time together. She has her home and husband in Delhi. My career takes me all over the place. Mom cribs we’re never together. This year-end reunion was something we had promised ourselves from long before,” she said.

I was persuaded to throw condoms at college crowd: Neha Dhupia

January 3, 2010

Neha Dhupia says she had to be goaded quite a bit to throw a goody bag full of condoms and contraceptive pills at a college crowd here to promote her film “Raat Gayi Baat Gayi” but realised it was a great marketing strategy that sent out a positive message.

“We had gone to the Mood Indigo festival at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) in Mumbai and I was asked to throw around this goody bag. I said ‘No! I’m not throwing it’,” Neha said. “But my producer (Rangita Nandy) insisted that ‘You must because it’s got everything to do with the film’.

“And I was like ‘No! What are we trying to project?’ But I guess that was her way of promoting the film. We are just mediums. So I said yes to it.”

“Raat Gayi Baat Gayi”, a Percept Picture Company (PPC) project, is about a one night stand. The movie has been directed by Saurabh Shukla and also features Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey.

The producers were trying to pull off a successful marketing stunt by throwing bags full of condoms, contraceptives, Disprin pills, et al, and Neha finally did it after realising that the exercise had a message attached to it.

“There was a message in all this – that if you have a hangover or if you are having a very drunk night – you must have contraceptives, protection, or antacid pills like Disprin. Everything was there in the bag. The message was – take it and go party. The bags had everything except cash to buy the alcohol,” said the 29-year-old.

The former beauty queen says she was pleasantly surprised with the response from the young students.

“The way the students reacted to me was so beautiful. It was the first time I ever went up to the stage and sang. I sang like a rock star or at least I thought I was. They just grabbed the bags. But if at that time, even if I would have thrown the wire of the mike, they would have grabbed it. Actually, initially I was hesitant about throwing it, but I learnt how to laugh with it,” she said.

After “Raat Gayi Baat Gayi”, in which she plays a mysterious woman called Sophia, Neha is looking forward to movies like “Action Replay”, “Raftaar” and “Pappu Can’t Dance Saala”.

She, however, admits that she would like to do a romantic movie opposite Bollywood’s king of romance Shah Rukh Khan.

“I am looking forward to a nice romantic film which hasn’t come my way yet. I am hoping to get that soon. I am a big Shah Rukh fan and I would like him to be in it but then it doesn’t have to be him. It can be anybody. It’s just that Shah Rukh is magnificent,” she added.

Vijay Amritraj downplays ‘Chennai controversies’

January 3, 2010

Am I a mascot for this tournament?,” asked Vijay Amritraj, somewhat perplexed on being asked variations of the same question.

The 2010 Chennai Open is yet to start but there is enough drama already, with the tennis legend skipping the official draw ceremony — having been the master of ceremonies for the last 14 years — amidst reports that he was unhappy with his son Prakash not being handed a wildcard for the event.

Also the fact that local newspapers had carried reports about tournament officials commenting on the issue added the necessary spice.

So it wasn’t surprising that the legend took time to settle down at a press conference, organised to clarify his stand on the whole issue, or, do we say, controversy.

“I think in most people’s eyes I would be (a mascot) as I was responsible for bringing this event to India [ Images ],” said Amritraj, adding, “but let’s not make a mountain out of a mole hill.”

The three-time Major quarter-finalist was quick to downplay his absence from the organising committee.

“I have absolutely no regrets for not being part of the organising committee,” said Amritraj.

An elaborate explanation followed.

“I was obviously not invited to be a part of the organising committee. But I never expected it either,” he said, adding, “I wasn’t there in it before as well. I was the non-executive chairman, more as a face of the tournament.

“And, hopefully, it helped the tournament. So it was just a question of moving on. But any help they need, I will always be there.”

Amritraj’s reply was guarded when he was asked to comment on the organisers.

“It is wrong to pick out on individuals because my commitment is to tennis, irrespective of who is running it,” he said.

“If somebody told me they want to ease me out, I would be happy to bow out. There’s no reason to do it in any particular manner,” he added.

However, Amritraj’s reply was straightforward when asked about his absence from the draw ceremony.

“I wasn’t invited for the draw ceremony,” he said.

Was he upset at Prakash not getting a wildcard?

“Absolutely not,” said Amritraj, defending himself at the first available opportunity.

“Very few things upset me.

“In fact my strong recommendation to the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association was very simple — that the first preference would go to the Davis Cup members, and since Carlos Moya [ Images ] was already getting a wildcard, if Somdev got into the draw on the basis of his ranking, Yuki should be given the next shot.”

And how did Prakash react to the whole issue, having received the wild card every year since 2002.

“The moment he realised he was not getting a wildcard, the first thing Prakash said to the media was that he was going to play in the qualifiers,” said the proud father.

“And I think that’s where you show character, for there is no glory without guts!”
